چکیده

[1] Ephemeral disturbances, such as non-lethal insect defoliations and crown damage from meteorological events, can significantly affect the delivery of ecosystem services by helping maintain nitrogen (N) limitation in temperate forest ecosystems. However, the impacts of these disturbances are difficult to observe across the broad-scales at which they affect ecosystem function. Using remotely sensedmeasures and field data, we find support for the hypothesis that ephemeral disturbances help maintain landscape-wide ecosystem N limitation. Specifically, a phenology-based defoliation index derived from daily MODIS satellite imagery predicts three ecosystem responses from oak-dominated forested watersheds: elevated stream water N export (R = 0.48), decreased foliar N (R = 0.69, assessed with Hyperion imagery), and reduced vegetation growth vigor (R = 0.49, assessed with Landsat ETM+ imagery). The results indicate that ephemeral disturbances and other forest stressors may sustain N limitation by reducing the ability of trees to compete for –and retainsoil available N.Citation: McNeil, B. Feasibility and Accuracy of Modis 250m Imagery for Forest Disturbance Monitoring

Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images were compared to Terra-MODIS imagery for detecting forest changes in northern Maine’s industrial forest. Advantages of MODIS imagery compared to medium spatial resolution imagery, like Landsat TM or ETM+, are its temporal frequency, its low data volume to cover large forest regions and, the data are free to download over the Internet. The obje...

Continental-scale validation of MODIS-based and LEDAPS Landsat ETM+ atmospheric correction methods

The potential of Landsat data processing to provide systematic continental scale products has been demonstrated by several projects including the NASA Webenabled Landsat Data (WELD) project. The recent free availability of Landsat data increases the need for robust and efficient atmospheric correction algorithms. This study compares the accuracy of two Landsat atmospheric correction methods: a ...

North American forest disturbance mapped from a decadal Landsat record

Article history: Received 26 December 2006 Received in revised form 8 February 2008 Accepted 9 February 2008 Forest disturbance and recovery are critical ecosystem processes, but the spatial pattern of disturbance has never been mapped across North America. The LEDAPS (Landsat Ecosystem Disturbance Adaptive Processing System) project has assembled a wall-to-wall record of stand-clearing disturb...

Mapping Forest Composition in the Appalachians Using Data From EO-1 Hyperion, Landsat, and AVIRIS

The objectives of this investigation were to evaluate the EO-1 Hyperion hyperspectral sensor for mapping forest composition and structure in rugged terrain and to compare its performance with that of AVIRIS and the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). The study focused on species composition mapping with Hyperion, AVIRIS, and Landsat using a study site in the Green Ridge State Forest...

Comparative Analysis of EO-1 ALI and Hyperion, and Landsat ETM+ Data for Mapping Forest Crown Closure and Leaf Area Index

In this study, a comparative analysis of capabilities of three sensors for mapping forest crown closure (CC) and leaf area index (LAI) was conducted. The three sensors are Hyperspectral Imager (Hyperion) and Advanced Land Imager (ALI) onboard EO-1 satellite and Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). A total of 38 mixed coniferous forest CC and 38 LAI measurements were collected at Blod...
